PORTLAND, Ore. — The Salem-Keizer Public Schools district has preemptively canceled classes for Tuesday, Jan. 16, due to the extreme winter weather conditions throughout northwest Oregon this weekend.
All schools throughout the region are already set to be closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, but weather forecasts as of Sunday show that the region's temperatures will remain below freezing for the next two days, with the possibility of another round of snow, sleet or freezing rain on Tuesday.
All Salem-Keizer school buildings and district offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday, the district said, including all indoor and outdoor school or district events and any planned uses of school facilities by community groups.
Portland Public Schools also warned in a news release Sunday that all planned athletic or community use permits for district buildings would be canceled for Monday due to the weather, although the district noted that Monday was already not going to be a school day due to the holiday.
PPS said its leaders would meet on Monday and again on Tuesday morning to consider the forecast, and would make a decision about any cancellation or delayed start changes for Tuesday after that.
As of early Sunday afternoon, no other Portland-area school districts have announced delays or closures for Tuesday. KGW will update this story if any new information becomes available.
