PORTLAND, Ore. — The owner of two dogs that mauled and killed a 6-year-old boy in December 2023 has been indicted on four felony charges, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reported Wednesday.
A grand jury indicted the dogs' owner, 56-year-old Koko M. Miller, for criminally negligent homicide, maintaining a dangerous dog and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment.
The boy was killed on Dec. 5, 2023. Police said every morning, the boy's grandmother would drop off the boy at the house of her friend, who owned the dogs. The friend would then take the child to school. On the morning of Dec. 5, the boy opened the door to the garage and the dogs attacked him.
When officers arrived at the home in Northeast Portland, a woman covered in blood opened the door. Police said she had injuries to her hands from trying to stop the dogs during the attack. The boy was later pronounced dead at the scene.
"She did everything in her power to stop the attack, at one point even grabbing a gun," PPB spokesperson Mike Benner said in December, following the attack. "She did everything she could to save this boy's life."
Portland police said the two dogs involved in the attack were Great Dane-Mastiff mixes. Both dogs have since been euthanized. There was a third dog in the house at the time of the attack. That dog was being held by Multnomah County Animal Services pending further investigation, police said in December. Portland police did not say on Wednesday where that dog is now.
