Shooter at Vancouver Mall wore Halloween mask, police say

The shooting, which left one man dead and two injured, happened during a family trick-or-treat event at the mall. Police said there's no active threat.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — The shooter at the Vancouver Mall on Thursday evening wore a Halloween mask while firing shots during a trick-or-treating event, killing one man.

Children and parents hid in stores and anywhere they could find shelter after shots rang out on the second floor of the mall in the food court. Two men, 30 and 40 years old, were injured. Both have been released from the hospital, Vancouver police said.

The identity of the man who died has not yet been confirmed.

Police are still looking for the shooter but said there is no active threat. Detectives believe the shooting was a targeted attack. The two men who were injured are not believed to be the intended targets, but were near where the shooting occurred. As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made.

"Last night should have been an evening of Halloween fun at Vancouver Mall," said Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle in a statement. "Instead, it turned to fear as reports of shots being fired spread."

Vancouver police said anyone who left personal property behind at the mall Thursday night can pick it up in the mall security office or contact mall security for information. Vancouver Mall is not expected to open until 3 p.m. Friday.

Anyone with information about the shooting, and who has not yet spoken with police, is asked to call the Vancouver Police Tip Line at 360-487-7399.

"As we learn more, I am hearing stories of mall employees ushering people into stores to shelter behind security doors and in back offices," McEnerny-Ogle said. "Thank you for your help and bravery in keeping mall patrons safe."
