Married couple dead after apparent murder-suicide in Astoria

Astoria police said a maintenance employee found two unresponsive people lying on the floor in an apartment building.

ASTORIA, Ore. — A man and a woman were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide shooting at an apartment building in Astoria, according to the Astoria Police Department.

On Wednesday morning at around 9:57 a.m., Astoria dispatch took a call from a maintenance employee at the Bayshore Apartments located at West Marine Drive. The employee said he found two unresponsive people lying on the floor and in one of the apartment buildings. When Astoria police and Oregon State Police arrived, they found a man and woman dead from gunshot wounds, according to Astoria police.

Astoria police said responders performed first aid, but both victims were later pronounced dead.

Investigators later found that the victims were married, and from the evidence at the scene, it appears that the husband shot the wife and turned the gun on himself, according to Astoria police.

Police identified the woman as 51-year-old Denise Lynn Mathew, who was killed by her husband, 57-year-old Scott Mathew, investigators said.
