Portland police car damaged in a hit-and-run

The driver of a pickup briefly stopped, then started to drive away. But the truck was too damaged, so instead he abandoned it and ran away.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police is searching for a driver who ran away after striking a Portland police car at a red light in the St. Johns neighborhood Saturday morning. 

The sergeant driving the car was not seriously injured, Portland police said. 

Around 9:13 a.m., the sergeant was stopped at a red light at the North Fessenden Street and North Columbia Way intersection when a driver of a pickup truck struck the vehicle and a Mazda minivan. 

The driver of the pickup briefly stopped, then started to drive away. However, the vehicle was damaged, so he instead abandoned it and ran away, Portland police said. 

Officers responding to the scene searched for the suspect, along with a K9 unit, but had no luck.

The man's vehicle has been seized as evidence and the police vehicle had to be towed due to the damage. The minivan's driver was able to drive away. Portland police said the investigation is continuing.
