Tillamook police chief convicted after taking meth, cash from evidence room

Tillamook Police Chief Raymond Rau was charged with official misconduct in the first degree, according to court documents.

TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Ore. — A Tillamook police chief has been convicted for official misconduct for tampering with evidence and can no longer work as an officer in the state of Oregon.

Tillamook Police Chief Raymond Rau pleaded no contest and was sentenced on Wednesday to two counts of official misconduct, according to Tillamook County court documents.

Rau was sentenced to 10 days in jail, and he must surrender his certification as a law enforcement officer "no later than April 26."

Rau was also ordered to pay the City of Tillamook $800 in restitution.

Rau had nearly 30 years' experience in law enforcement and led the Tillamook Police department since July 2021. He had been on administrative leave since May 2023.

Charges filed last year said that Rau knowingly did "remove controlled substances from the Tillamook Police evidence locker room ... with intent to obtain a benefit." According to those charges, the value of the drugs was estimated at less than $100. They also allege that Rau took cash with a total value of $100 or more — the precise amount is not listed. He had done this between October 1, 2021, and May 8, 2023, according to court documents.
