PORTLAND, Ore. — An officer for The Dalles Police Department who shot and killed a man in June will not be criminally charged. The deadly shooting happened after the man rammed a police car and directed his truck at officers.

Two Wasco County Sheriff's deputies, Tyler Williams and Joshua Augustus, were also found "justified" in their use of force.

Jeremy Dutton of The Dalles police shot and killed 68-year-old Jimmy L. Ewing, also known as August J. Law, on June 18. On Friday, Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis said a grand jury ruled the use of force was not criminal under Oregon law.

Around 1:41 a.m. on June 18, Wasco County Sheriff's Office deputies noticed a large tow truck dragging a cable in the Home Depot parking lot on West 6th Street in The Dalles. Officers said the driver was acting suspiciously.

After attempting to the stop the driver, a small chase ensued that ended at an Astro gas station. The officer and deputies open fired at the driver after he rammed and pushed a police car onto an embankment.

Law was hit by gunfire, given medical aid at the scene by first responders and taken to a hospital, where he died.
