Around 11:44 p.m. on June 27, officers responded to the area of Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Knight Street near The Lion's Eye Tavern, where someone reported that shots were fired and a man was hit. When officers arrived, Hecker was found dead.

Hecker's family said he and his girlfriend were out at a bar near their home when he was shot out front "in a senseless act of violence." He died in his girlfriend's arms on the sidewalk, a statement from the family said.

According to his family, Hecker was involved in Portland's culinary industry and most recently worked at Silk Road in the Pearl District, where he helped to create the bar's cocktail menu.
