PORTLAND, Ore. — A driver who was arrested after allegedly hitting and killing another man who was riding his bike in February has been indicted by a Multnomah County grand jury.

In July, the grand jury heard the case against 22-year-old Shane M. McKeever, who was then indicted for second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

On Feb. 25, around 2:45 a.m., police responded to a crash in Portland's Buckman neighborhood, where they found a man with a bike with serious injuries. The man, identified as 48-year-old David R. Bentley, was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Bentley was homeless at the time.

McKeever, the driver, had fled the scene and was detained by bystanders a few blocks away until officers arrived and arrested him.

Dozens of cyclists honored Bentley with a memorial bike ride in March, which started at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and ended in the Buckman neighborhood. Bikeloud PDX then installed a "ghost bike" at the site.

At the memorial, David’s mother, Theresa Fletcher, recalled her son's generous spirit.

“David was one of the greatest people and best friends I have ever had. He was always there for people. He would do anything for you; he would have given his life for someone, which apparently, he kind of did,” Fletcher told KGW.

According to PPB, this is the 44th homicide in Portland year-to-date.
