Suspect dies after her shoots himself at Albany liquor store

A man who took several hostages during an armed robbery at an Albany liquor store Monday morning ended up shooting himself and later dying, police said.

ALBANY, Ore. – A man who took several hostages during an armed robbery at an Albany liquor store Monday morning ended up shooting himself, latery dying, police said.

The man, later identified as 62-year-old Gerald Armand Thompson of Eugene, entered Santiam Liquor, located at 2530 SE Pacific Boulevard, at around 11:30 a.m.

Police evacuated a several-block radius around the store after learning Thompson had taken hostages.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., police heard a shot from inside the store, followed by another shot a few minutes later, according to Albany Police Lt. Brad Liles.

Two hostages came out of the store and said Thompson shot himself.

A SWAT team entered the store and found Thompson. Medics took him to a Corvallis hospital where he later died.

None of the victims was hurt.
