PORTLAND, Ore. — U.S. Marshals have arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 63-year-old man in Southwest Portland on Christmas morning, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said Wednesday.

Jared L. Landry, 37, was arrested on Wednesday in Vancouver, PPB said.

On Dec. 25, around 12:19 a.m., an off-duty Portland police officer discovered the pedestrian, 63-year-old David Wayne Becker, on Southeast Stark Street at Southeast 106th Avenue. The driver had fled the scene, according to Portland police.

The officer then called 911 and provided first aid to Becker. Although Becker was taken to the hospital, PPB said that he did not survive.

Portland's Major Crash Team investigated the scene, closing Southeast Stark Street at Southeast 106th Avenue for several hours after the crash.

In a secret indictment on Jan. 12, a Multnomah County grand jury charged Landry with failure to perform the duties of a driver resulting in death, attempt to elude police, recklessly endangering another person and reckless driving. His vehicle, a red Dodge Ram, was also seized from a Vancouver apartment complex in December.

The Vancouver resident is currently being held in the Clark County Jail, awaiting extradition to Oregon, PPB said.
