PORTLAND, Ore. — A 35-year-old man was arrested after trying to flee from officers while driving a stolen vehicle in Portland on Saturday night, according to police.
Officers with Portland police’s Gang Enforcement Team spotted a black Mazda 3 speeding on Southeast Division Street near 139th Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. After checking the vehicle’s license plate, officers learned the car was reported stolen to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
When officers turned on emergency lights and siren, the driver sped away. Because of foggy conditions and traffic, officers did not pursue the driver for safety reasons, police said. Officers still provided radio updates on the direction the driver was headed.
An officer near Southeast 102nd Avenue and Stark Street learned the car was heading in his direction. The officer deployed spike strips on Southeast Stark Street. The driver drove over the spike strips but continued to drive away, police said.
North Precinct officers later located a black Mazda 3 driving with no rubber on its wheels near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Tillamook Street. Officers saw the driver stop and run into the neighborhood, police said.
Officers searched the area with the help of a K-9 team. The K-9 located the suspect hiding in a vehicle in the 8300 block of Northeast Hancock Street. The suspect, identified as Matthew W. Golding, was taken into custody.
Golding was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving while revoked, escape, interfering with a peace officer, attempt to elude by vehicle, and attempt to elude on foot.
