PORTLAND, Ore. — One person was injured and another is in custody following a shooting Thursday afternoon on Southwest Capitol Highway in Portland.
The shooting apparently took place in a parking lot behind the Islamic School of Portland, according to the Portland Police Bureau. The building is located on Capitol Highway a couple blocks south of the intersection with Southwest Barbur Boulevard and Interstate 5.
Police received reports at about 2:23 p.m. of a shooting involving two men, according to police. They arrived and found an injured man in the parking lot of a Shell gas station adjacent to the school. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition and the extent of his injuries are not known.
They also learned that the suspected shooter had entered the school building, but he exited the building on his own and was taken into custody without incident. Investigators believe the two men knew each other and were both connected to the school and a nearby mosque.
PPB later identified the suspect as Noureddine Dib, 42, of Beaverton. He's been lodged in jail on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
Police searched the school building to make sure everyone was safe, and recovered a firearm from the scene. A section of the adjacent highway could be seen roped off with police caution tape Thursday afternoon, with a large number of officers present.
There were children in the school at the time of the shooting, but a police spokesman called the shooting an isolated incident and said investigators are certain it occurred outside in the parking lot, not inside the school.
"Today a shooting occurred near an Islamic school and mosque between two people who knew one other," said PPB Chief Bob Day in a statement. "To be clear, this shooting was not a school shooting or a bias crime.
"Events like this one are a testament to the critical need for our strong partnership with the Muslim community. I am grateful to the members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council for their continued support and direct engagement in community safety and well-being."
