Security guard at health center in Northeast Portland hospitalized after attack

Joshua Collmar is facing an attempted murder charge. The security guard is expected to survive.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Police arrested a man suspected of attacking a security guard at a health center in Northeast Portland Monday morning. He is facing an attempted murder charge.

Officers responded to a report of a stabbing around 11 a.m. at the Garlington Health Center near Northeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and Northeast Morris Street. According to a statement released by the Garlington Health Center, the security guard "was attacked by an individual walking into the health center." The statement didn't specify whether the security guard was stabbed.

The security guard, who hasn't been identified, was taken to the hospital but is expected to survive, Portland police said. No other staff or patients were injured.

"As we learn more about today’s incident, we are immensely thankful that our colleague is in stable condition,” said Derald Walker, president and CEO of Cascadia Health, which operates the Garlington Health Center.

Police arrested 35-year-old Joshua Collmar. He faces charges of attempted murder and assault.

Cascadia Health is cooperating with the investigation and said there is no longer a threat.

"In addition, we will work to address the immediate and ongoing emotional toll and offer support to those involved," Walker said.

The Garlington Health Center is closed and will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Cascadia Health said it has contacted clients about scheduling changes. The health center provides multiple services including primary care, wellness programs and recovery support.

In July, a mental health care worker was stabbed to death by a resident at a Cascadia Health facility in Gresham.
