Unarmed 83-year-old security guard killed on duty in Vancouver

Police said 83-year-old Benjamin O. Lyons worked for KnightHawk Protection, and was on duty patrolling the business complex when someone killed him.

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The widow of a security guard who was found dead while on duty in Vancouver says she'll miss "his love, his laughter, his kidding, his joking and his devotion of who he was.”

Police on Tuesday announced that 83-year-old Benjamin O. Lyons of Vancouver was the man found dead on Monday. He died from "multiple sharp and blunt force injuries," according to the Clark County Medical Examiner's Office.

Lyons' body was found about 12:15 a.m. at a business complex at Southeast Kaiser Avenue and Columbia Way.

Police said Lyons worked for KnightHawk Protection, and was on duty patrolling the business complex when someone killed him.

Police do not have a suspect description or a motive.

Lyons' wife, Fran, said she hopes the suspect "gets the help he needs."

“I hope that the person is smart enough to turn themselves in. Or if there’s anybody out there who knows who did it, turn him in," she said.

"Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable, that an officer can be patrolling a commercial business center like that, and this could happen," said KnightHawk Protection owner Rusty Rice. "Unbelievable."

He said Vancouver police called him early in the morning to tell him someone killed one of his security guards while on duty. He said Lyons had worked with the company for about a year, and was a kind, outgoing person, who loved others. And that he was unarmed.

"I just can't imagine what the justification would be, what someone would be thinking, to do something like that," Rice said. "He's one of these guys that you meet once in a lifetime. You just remember him. And that was the case with this individual. Just a great guy"
