PORTLAND, Ore. — Police are asking for the public's help to find a man connected to a shooting that injured two people, a man and his 11-year-old niece, in Southeast Portland Tuesday evening. The suspect may have been targeting the man's sister.
Around 7:33 p.m., officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex near East Burnside Street and Southeast 160th Avenue and found an 11-year-old girl and her uncle with gunshot wounds.
Witnesses identified the suspect as 36-year-old Rashad Calbert, according to Portland police.
KGW spoke with the man, who did not want to be identified out of safety concerns. He told KGW that he was inside talking to his father on the phone when the suspect fired shots.
"He's like, 'You're not going to open the door?' And I said 'No' and he just started opening fire," the man told KGW, adding that he was shot in the hand.
He said his niece, who was also hit by gunfire, called police because he was unable to use his hand. Both were hospitalized and released, and are now recovering at home.
It appears the suspect may have been targeting the man's sister. According to court records, Calbert was arrested on domestic violence charges in November. He is accused of hitting the woman, the 11-year-old's mother, with a baseball bat. The charges were dismissed in December.
Calbert is wanted for multiple charges included attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawfully discharging a firearm inside city limits.
Portland police said Calbert is known to travel using public transit. They are asking anyone who sees him to call 911.
Anyone who has information about the shooting and has not yet spoken with police are also asked to send an email to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-9351.
The shooting comes as the city of Portland faces ongoing issues of gun violence. Portland police confirmed 96 homicides in 2022, surpassing 2021's record-setting 90 homicides, which was the deadliest year in the city's modern history.
