Teen arrested for murder of 16-year-old boy in Salem, sheriff's office says

A 911 caller reported that a juvenile had been shot near Skyline Road Southeast in Salem just before 1 a.m. on June 23.

SALEM, Ore. — A 18-year-old faces murder charges in the killing of a 16-year-old in Salem, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

On June 23 just before 1 a.m., a 911 caller reported that a juvenile had been shot near Skyline Road Southeast in Salem. Law enforcement personnel from the sheriff's office responded to the area and attempted to provide medical aid, but the juvenile died at the scene.

The juvenile, who was 16 years old, has not been identified. His official cause of death has not yet been released.

Detectives with the sheriff's office identified the suspect as 18-year-old David Ayon-Urbano. He was arrested for murder in the second degree and additional charges. The sheriff's office did not immediately share information about the additional charges and denied KGW's interview request.

Ayon-Urbano was arraigned Monday afternoon at the Marion County Court Annex. Judge Michael Wu denied bail for Ayon-Urbano.

“I do find that you have been charged with murder, and I will deny release based on my review of states exhibit number one, the proof is strong, and the presumption is strong that you are guilty,” Wu said.

One man told KGW that he heard a gunshot early Sunday morning. He walked down the street from his home and saw a young woman holding the 16-year-old in her arms.

Ayon-Urbano is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on July 1.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Detective Jessica Van Horn at 503-584-6211.
