PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland women who pushed a 3-year-old child onto the MAX train tracks in December 2022 will spend 10 years in psychiatric custody after she was found guilty except for insanity on five felony counts.
Brianna Workman, 33, was convicted Wednesday on charges of attempted first-degree assault, second-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree assault, recklessly endangering another person and interfering with public transportation.
The incident happened Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the Gateway Transit Center MAX platform in Northeast Portland. The 3-year-old girl was waiting with her mother on the platform near the tracks. Workman suddenly stood up from a bench behind them and pushed the girl onto the tracks. People nearby quickly rescued the girl.
Witnesses said that there was no train coming at the time that the child was pushed.
The girl landed face-first onto the metal rail. She suffered minor injuries and reported having a headache, said a responding Port of Portland officer.
Prior to the attack, Workman had several felony convictions on misdemeanor charges and heroin possession in 2013. Court documents indicated that Workman had been homeless around the time of the incident.
The girl's mother told investigators that she and her daughter had no interaction with Workman prior to the attack, according to court documents.
Witnesses said that Workman pushed the girl for no apparent reason. One woman said she saw just saw a "little girl flying into the tracks" face-first and the child's head bouncing off the metal of the track.
Workman received the maximum time for all of her charges.
