Portland mom still searching for answers five years after 19-year-old daughter's murder

August 30, 2024 marks five years since Logan Nettleton was shot and killed in her Southeast Portland apartment. Her murder remains unsolved.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It has been five years since 19-year-old Logan Nettleton was gunned down in her own apartment near Southeast 174th Avenue and Powell Boulevard. Since that day, her murder remains unsolved.

"Our lives stopped, you know, and it's so weird to watch everybody else going on," said Mya Chamberlin, Nettleton's mother.

In that time, she said her grief has evolved.

"It's gets different. The sharp edges start to dull, which is a blessing and a curse," Chamberlin said. "It's hard to hear her voice sometimes. And when I dream about her, I always just see the back of her head walking away from me."

Nettleton was her only child, and her daughter had a child of her own, named King. Chamberlin called her an incredible spirit who was smart and fiercely independent. Although she was a young mom, she was an amazing caregiver to her son.

"Just thinking about this week, it was King‘s first day in the third grade, and as privileged as I feel and getting to be a part of that, it was never supposed to be me," Chamberlin said. "It was supposed to be his mom taking him to school."

Over the years, Chamberlin said people have told her that her daughter wasn't the target. That she was at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

"Which is really frustrating, when your 19-year-old daughter is in her own home in the middle of the night and going to school and working. She was right where she needed to be. Other people were not," Chamberlin said.

One month before the shooting, Nettleton moved out of her mom's house, and into her own apartment in Southeast Portland. Chamberlin said the suspects burst into the house and shot numerous times.

According to police, another victim, later identified as Nettleton's then-boyfriend, was also shot but ultimately survived his injuries. His child was at the home at the time, but officials say he was not harmed in the shooting.

"One of the things that is still really complicated and frustrating for us is the fact that there’s this surviving eyewitness to the entire thing," Chamberlin said, "It’s really hard to understand how we don’t have more answers than we do at this point."

Five years later, she hopes for some form of justice. If not for her, then for Nettleton's now 9-year-old son.

"I think the biggest thing is trying to figure out what to tell King," Chamberlin said. "He’s good. He’s thriving all in all, but the day is going to come when he really needs more answers than I can give him."
