PORTLAND, Ore. — Two men are under arrest for firing shots at homes in Northeast Portland near Rocky Butte, Portland police said.
Around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to reports of gunshots on Rocky Butte and captured video from their police airplane of two men firing shots from a pickup truck toward homes along Northeast Rocky Butte Road. It's unclear from the video why the men were firing a gun.
No injuries were reported, police said.
"I was playing with the baby on the bed and all of a sudden I heard seven, nine shots," said neighbor Jeff Pry.
Pry and his family ducked for cover right before the second round of gunfire.
"It sounded like it was literally in our front yard... It's really nerve-racking to know that people are that silly to go around and shoot guns in the air when there's people, babies, things like that," Pry said.
When officers tried to stop the truck, the driver began driving recklessly at high speeds and swerving onto oncoming traffic. Police used spikes to deflate the truck's left rear tire. However, the driver continued to drive on a flat tire until they lost control and spun out at Northeast 81st Avenue and Fremont Street.
The driver, Arinoldo B. Cruz-Garcia, 23, was arrested on seven charges, including unlawful use of a weapon and driving under the influence for alcohol consumption. The passenger Ahanu M. Johnson, 21, was arrested on four charges, including unlawful use of a weapon and recklessly endangering another person.
Police said there may be additional charges as officers continue to investigate, including looking for bullet strikes on people's property.
