PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Police Bureau released details Friday on 32 people taken into custody during a crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests on the Portland State University campus, culminating this week in the clearing of an occupied university library building.
Demonstrations at PSU coincided with similar protests on college campuses throughout the U.S., many of them prompting police crackdowns. Like at PSU's Millar Library, but on a much larger scale, police in New York on Thursday stormed an administrative building at Columbia University that had been commandeered by protesters.
As of Friday, more than 2,300 demonstrators had been arrested on American campuses.
Arrests at PSU happened in fits and starts throughout the day Thursday. That morning, Portland police officers pushed through barricades blocking the entrance to the Millar Library and made their way inside, arresting three people. Over a dozen other demonstrators reportedly escaped as police moved in and are still being sought.
As police tried to take those suspects away in a van, more protesters attempted to block them in. Officers ultimately made more arrests of demonstrators who tried to follow the van onto I-405.
After Portland police left the PSU campus, some demonstrators began taking down barriers erected by the university and made their way back into the library. Late in the afternoon, police returned to clear the library again, making eight more arrests. Several more people were taken into custody by PSU Campus Safety throughout the day.
It's unclear where the bulk of these arrests occurred, as Portland police reported that just over a dozen happened inside the library throughout the day. A PPB spokesperson said that some were arrested outside for trespassing in the park after being notified that it was closed.
Ages of those arrested range from 18 to 60. The majority of arrests were for second-degree criminal trespass and included no other charges, while five included either assault or attempted assault on a public safety officer. Just two included second-degree burglary charges.
According to the latest information from PPB, "at least six" of the 30 people they arrested were PSU students. They did not say which individuals those were.
Court records show at least two of those arrested had their charges dropped Friday.
