Man arrested in deadly shooting of girlfriend outside Portland apartments

Police have arrested a man for the murder of his former roommate and girlfriend, found shot dead in the Parkrose Heights neighborhood in November.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police arrested a suspect Tuesday for the murder of a woman found shot dead in the Parkrose Heights neighborhood in November. 

At around 4 p.m. on Nov. 22, Portland police responded to a report of a shooting outside of an apartment complex on Northeast Weidler Street near 111th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Nicole Lashawn Davis dead from a gunshot wound.

Detectives identified Richard David Simms, Jr., 30, as a suspect. Simms is in custody and is facing three charges, including second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm. Charging documents said that Simms had been previously convicted of arson in Multnomah County in 2014.

Davis and Simms were living together and in an intimate relationship, with Simms being described in court documents as "a sexually intimate cohabitant of Davis."
