PORTLAND, Ore. — Officers are searching for a man who is reportedly armed with a gun in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood of Southeast Portland, according to the Portland Police Bureau. At least one home has been evacuated, but no injuries have been reported.
At around 1:43 p.m., Portland police responded to reports of a man reportedly armed with a gun near 4500 Southeast 122nd Avenue. PPB said the suspect ran into the neighborhood when officers found him and informed him that he was under arrest. Police tactical teams, including The Portland Police Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), were activated early Tuesday evening.
Officers have set up a perimeter and believe they have contained the suspect. Traffic is restricted in and around the area of Southeast 124th Avenue to Southeast 128th Avenue, Southeast Harold Avenue and Southeast Reedway Avenue. Resources for searching included drones over the Southeast Portland area.
The area of a perimeter has been set near Pizza Hut, Plaid Pantry, Master Movers Moving & Storage, vacant lot and with some apartments and homes nearby. The block where the search for the suspect is ongoing is not too far from Gilbert Heights Elementary school. Police said residents have been notified via the Public Alerts system.
At least one home in the 12700 block of Southeast Reedway Street has been evacuated, police said. Students from the nearby Alice Ott Middle School are being cared for at the school, and their families have been notified. A Portland Police School Liaison officer is also working with the David Douglas School District.
PPB has not released any further details regarding the suspect.
