Man faces charges after 100 mph police chase, Portland home break-in

Video from the Portland Police Bureau's surveillance plane shows the driver speeding through residential neighborhoods before crashing into a police cruiser.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man is facing multiple felony charges after eluding police at speeds over 100 mph and breaking into a home in Northeast Portland, according to Portland Police Bureau.

On Friday, at 6:23 p.m., officers responded to a report of a stolen green Subaru Outback station wagon being driven by a person who had a known history of illegal gun possession, PPB said. After officers located the Subaru near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard, the driver began to elude and drive "extremely recklessly."

A video shows the driver, identified as Dalton Williams, 24, weaving in and out of traffic, nearly causing several crashes. For 20 minutes, police tracked the Subaru as it sped from Southeast Portland into Gresham, then into Northeast Portland.

The vehicle can be seen running red lights, going onto the shoulder and into a bike lane. Williams was allegedly speeding through residential neighborhoods before eventually crashing head-on into a police vehicle with its lights on.

Williams then ran from the crash and briefly entered a home through the back door near Northeast 15th Avenue before reemerging and surrendering to officers, PPB said.

"There was suddenly a swarm of police cars," said neighbor Pat Clancy. "They got out of their cars and told us to immediately go inside and lock our doors."

Clancy watched some of the action through his window.

"I saw the man they were chasing go over our fence and into our neighbors' yard," said Clancy, noting his neighbors were having a graduation party at the time.

"He didn't stop, he just kept running through," said Clancy. "They didn't feel threatened, but they didn't like it much."

No injuries have been reported as a result of the chase, according to PPB.

Williams was booked on numerous charges, including unauthorized use of a vehicle, attempt to elude, first-degree burglary, reckless driving, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to perform the duties of a driver, first-degree criminal mischief, and outstanding warrants.
