Portland police arrested man who barricaded himself inside a home at 2400 Southwest 5th Avenue for several hours with a knife.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police arrested a man who had been barricaded in a Southwest Portland home since Friday night, the Portland Police Bureau reported Saturday morning.

Around 11:34 p.m., officers responded to a call of "banging sounds" heard outside a home, at 2400 Southwest 5th Avenue, that's basement is divided into four apartments. The man had a knife in his hand and refused to come out of the basement.

Crisis negotiation officers were brought in, building residents were evacuated, and nearby streets were blocked off, Portland police said. At one point during negotiations, officers saw what appeared to be "flames and smelled smoke." Portland Fire was brought into to have water lines ready.

Police negotiated with the man for several hours. Then, around 6 a.m., officers deployed pepper spray to "create an irritating environment." The remained inside still holding the knife. Officers then used an "irritant gas" in the basement.

At 6:40 a.m., the man dropped the knife and surrendered to officers, Portland police said. He was placed in custody and medically evaluated.

Police said the streets closed due to the incident will reopen once all personnel and equipment have been cleared.
