PORTLAND, Ore. — The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office is seeking public help in solving a three-decades-old missing person case and two comparatively recent murder cases. None of the cases are suspected to be connected; detectives are simply looking for any leads that could help solve any of them.

The three cases are outlined below:

John Doe

Unidentified skeletal remains were found of an adult male at Northeast Halsey Street and Fairview Parkway in Fairview on March 19. Detectives estimate that the remains had likely been there for nine months or longer.

Detectives believe the person was Hispanic or European and in his mid-20s to late 30s. He had three prior rib fractures, an extra vertebra and wisdom teeth.

On April 8, 2022, 44-year-old Jeremy Levi Gurtner was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the Columbia River Slough near Northeast 105th Avenue and Northeast Alderwood Road in Portland.

Detectives estimate that Gurtner had been dead anywhere from four days to three weeks before being discovered. A passerby called 911 to report what appeared to be a body in the water.

Gutner's cousin, Chrysanthius Lathan, told KGW at the time that "there's a special place in hell for people who take people's lives."

"I don't know who was involved but whoever was involved is a sick individual," she added. "I don't care what lifestyle someone lives, no one deserves their life to be taken away."

Two years later, Gutner's family is still looking for answers.

“This past year without him has been extremely difficult," a family spokesperson said. "Our family will never be the same.  Having to live in a community where you don't know if the person who took the life of your loved one is sitting next to you at a coffee shop, or in line behind you at the grocery store is frightening."

Crime Stoppers of Oregon is offering a $2,500 cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone can submit a secure and anonymous tip regarding the homicide at the Crime Stoppers website.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Detective Daren Taber at 503-988-4356 or at daren.taber@mcso.us.
