PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland police officer shot and killed a man while responding to a theft call in Northeast Portland on the morning of Dec. 6, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reported.
The officer who shot the man is Justin Clary, a 22-year veteran of the police force, PPB said in a Thursday news release.
Police identified the man who died as 27-year-old Isaac L. Seavey in a news release on Dec. 8 and said the medical examiner had confirmed he died from gunshot wounds, but did not include any new details about the circumstances of the shooting.
Officers responded at 10:03 a.m. to a theft call on Northeast Marx Drive near Northeast 92nd Drive, an industrial area southeast of the Portland International Airport. A PPB spokesperson said the initial investigation led officers to an RV parked along the street, and during an encounter at the RV, Clary shot and killed Seavey.
Police did not say how many shots were fired or how many times Seavey was struck. At the time they didn't identify the two officers PPB said were directly involved in the shooting. No information was initially provided about what happened during the encounter that led to the officer firing their weapon.
In a news release late Wednesday afternoon, PPB said the incident began when someone who works in the area reported "theft of power" from a business. The agency also said detectives found a handgun near the deceased man during their investigation after the shooting, but did not add any new details about the circumstances of the shooting.
The two officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. Neither of the two officers were injured.
Yellow crime scene tape could be seen blocking Northeast Marx Drive as authorities investigated. A PPB spokesperson said they're still in the early stages of the investigation and police will release more information as soon as possible.
