Police identify man killed in stabbing on Portland's Steel Bridge

Police said two people were fighting when one person stabbed the other in the leg. The man died in the hospital.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was killed in a stabbing on Portland's Steel Bridge the afternoon of March 15, Portland police said.

On Thursday, Portland police identified the man dead as 38-year-old Fernando Luis Aguirre. The Medical Examiner said Aguirre died by stabbing.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation found two people were fighting on the lower deck bike and pedestrian path of the Steel Bridge Friday, March 15 when one stabbed another in the leg with a knife. Officers responded just after 1 p.m. and found a man on the bridge with life-threatening injuries. They applied tourniquets and took the man to the hospital, where he died.

A knife at the scene was seized as evidence. No immediate arrests were made on Friday and police said that day the suspect was on the run.

On Saturday morning, officers responding to reports of a man threatening someone else with a knife near Northwest 3rd Avenue and Northwest Davis Street found a man matching the description of the suspect in Friday's stabbing in the area and arrested him. Police released his name and age and said officers determined he may be connected to the homicide.

The man who was arrested Saturday has since been released, with charges dismissed. According to the Multnomah County District Attorney's office, there was not enough evidence to issue criminal charges. Video evidence related to the stabbing "may shed light on the level of culpability of the involved parties," they added. The case remains an open investigation.
