PORTLAND, Ore. — A suspect in a stolen car caused a crash that injured multiple people in Northwest Portland on Friday after he tried to get away from police.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, a public safety support specialist with the agency was responding to a report for a stolen vehicle recovery near Northwest Marshall Street and Northwest 13th Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. They found the car, a 2025 BMW X6, saw two people inside and called for assistance from officers.
When the first police officer arrived on the scene, the BMW driver drove away "at a high, reckless speed." The officer at first turned on his lights, PPB said, but turned them off after the driver kept speeding away.
Regardless, the BMW driver kept going at a reckless pace, causing a fender-bender at Northwest 16th and Northrup before promptly speeding south. There, he hit two Toyota Prius sedans at Northwest 17th Avenue and Lovejoy, PPB said, impacting one of them so hard that it rolled onto its side. The crash damaged a parked car as well.
A Portland police officer then pulled up to pin the stolen car. The BMW driver instead got out and tried to run, but more arriving officers were able to surround and arrest him. They also detained the BMW passenger.
The drivers of both Toyotas were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
PPB identified the driver as David A. Callaway, 27. He was booked into jail on two counts of second-degree assault, failure to perform the duties of a driver, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, two counts of reckless endangering, possession of methamphetamine and both a felony and misdemeanor warrant.
The passenger, identified as 21-year-old Brooklyn J. Williams, was also booked on multiple warrants.
