PORTLAND, Ore. — A man accused of a stabbing in North Portland Wednesday night died while in police custody.
Around 10:05 p.m., police officers responded to a stabbing at a convenience store at the intersection of North Going Street and Interstate Avenue. The officers found a man with injuries believed to be non-life threatening, Portland police said. He was taken to a hospital.
Police officers searched the area for the suspect and found him nearby at North Interstate Avenue and North Humboldt street. The police officers detained him in handcuffs "without resistance or force used," Portland police said. Shortly after, police officers requested emergency medical services (EMS) to medically evaluate him. Portland police did not share any other details about why the officers made the request. The man "lost consciousness" as EMS was on their way. Police officers began CPR until EMS arrived, but the man died, Portland police said.
Portland Police Homicide Unit Detectives are investigating and the medical examiner will determine his cause of death. His name will be released after his identity has been confirmed and his family has been notified.
The police officers who were involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol "due to the circumstances," Portland police said.
