PORTLAND, Ore. — Police found a man suspected of two shootings in North Portland, including a homicide, dead on Nov. 7. More than a week later on Nov. 16, police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Zelalem Bikila Guyota.
Both shootings happened on Tuesday. Officers found a man with multiple gunshot wounds at a tractor trailer parking lot on North Portland Road near the Columbia Slough at 6:48 p.m. Officers provided medical aid and he was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, police said. Portland police later identified him as 39-year-old Duresa Kuri Tibeso. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
Officers also responded to a shooting at 6:44 p.m. near Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Russell Street. They found a man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, Portland police said. The man hasn't been identified.
Detectives with the Homicide Unit, the Enhanced Community Safety Team and the Focused Intervention Team began to investigate and learned the "suspect and victims are from the Ethiopian immigrant community, and concern spread quickly that the suspect may target additional members of the community," Portland police said. Officers responded to restaurants and businesses that could have been targeted "to prevent further violence."
Around 9:35 p.m., a park ranger found a man, later identified as Guyota, dead inside a vehicle on Northwest Pittock Drive. Police believe he was responsible for the two shootings. The medical examiner determined he died from a gunshot wound and ruled his death a suicide.
