PORTLAND, Ore. — A 25-year-old Newberg man was sentenced to nine months in federal prison on Monday for threatening a school shooting at a college in California in 2017, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon reported.
According to court documents, Vasily Barbiyeru sent a threatening email to various individuals and groups at Deep Springs College in Big Pine, California on Oct. 7, 2017. He'd previously been denied admission at the school.
Barbiyeru had previously posted a threat directed at the college on the 4chan message board and had sent similar threatening emails to the president of the college and others associated with the school.
Barbiyeru was also arrested after he allegedly made threats that prompted lockouts at several Lake Oswego schools on March 1, 2019. He was charged with first-degree disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, in Clackamas County Circuit Court. State charges are still pending.
Barbiyeru called Lake Oswego High School and said, "I'm coming over now and it's not going to be good," according to Lake Oswego police. School staff kept Barbiyeru on the line and he told staff he had guns, police said.
With the help of Newberg police, Lake Oswego police arrested Barbiyeru in his home Friday afternoon.
Police said there are no other suspects or persons of interest.
Lake Oswego High School, Lake Oswego Junior High, Transition Program and pool were placed into lockout for a couple hours.
