PORTLAND, Ore. — A mom is facing an attempted murder charge after firing a gun at a person but accidentally shooting her teenage son instead, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

Early Wednesday morning, officers had arrived after receiving a report of a shooting victim arriving at a local hospital. While there, they learned that the victim had been shot in neck by his mother about 10 minutes earlier near Southeast 130th Avenue and Southeast Sherman Street. According to PPB, he suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives then learned that his mother, 38-year-old Domanete Guirma, had been trying to shoot another person she knew; the bullet broke a back window and hit her son, who was sitting in the backseat.

Guirma has been booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and faces second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and recklessly endangering another person. It's unclear if the second-degree attempted murder charge is for her son or the other person.

The investigation is continuing, PPB said. If anyone has information about this case, please email crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 24-802181.
