PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 78-year-old woman is recovering after getting badly injured in an unprovoked attack.
“It’s extremely concerning,” said Sgt. Chris Burley of the Portland Police Bureau.
Burley says the stranger-on-stranger assault, which was caught on camera, happened Wednesday evening near Northeast 8th Avenue and Broadway Street. A man shoved a woman so hard she fell and slammed her face into a parked car.
“It definitely poses a risk to other members of the community and we want members to be safe,” said Burley.
Officers tracked down the suspect less than a mile away. This was the sixth time Justin Ames, 25, was arrested since the middle of March. Some of those arrests came after unprovoked attacks on a mall security guard and a mom pushing a stroller, but that is not all.
“We have a report of him causing $700 in damage to the window of a business and parked vehicle in Northwest Portland,” said Burley.
That is nothing to laugh at, but it pales in comparison to what Ames is accused of doing to a stranger more than 50 years his senior. She broke her nose and eye socket among other injuries.
“Nobody should be treated like that, obviously,” said Burley.
KGW wanted to know how Ames keeps getting out of jail. The Multnomah County Department of Community Justice released the following statement.
“Public Safety is our priority. When the individual was booked on less serious charges, based on the information available and release criteria he was not held. When he was booked on more serious charges he was held. “
Ames is currently being held in jail on an assault charge. Bail is set at $250,000.
