PORTLAND, Ore. — A man who shot another man several times in a parking lot in Hillsboro was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday, according to the Washington County District Attorney's Office.
A Washington County jury found 34-year-old Enrique Tapia-Chavez guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon on April 26. Judge Janelle Wipper also later found Tapia-Chavez guilty of felon in possession of a firearm.
The judge sentenced Tapia-Chavez to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years, the Washington County District Attorney's Office said.
On July 11, 2023, Tapia-Chavez drove his girlfriend's car into a strip mall parking lot near Southeast 10th Avenue and Southeast Walnut Street in Hillsboro. As he arrived, he watched Juan Javier Moncivais, 40, walk across the parking lot.
Surveillance cameras captured Tapia-Chavez leaving his car and firing multiple shot at Moncivais as the other man turned to run for his life, the Washington County District Attorney's Office said.
Tapia-Chavez continued to chase Moncivais, shooting him in the back and head multiple times before fleeing the scene. When officers arrived, the found Moncivais dead, but were unable to immediately identify him.
Tapia-Chavez will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Correction to begin serving his sentence.
