PORTLAND, Ore. — A man who was arrested for killing his girlfriend's father in Northeast Portland had been sentenced to 19 years in prison, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
On Tuesday, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced 24-year-old Zachary Tyler Hackman for the murder of 54-year-old James Orlando Harris in 2022. Harris was the father of Hackman’s girlfriend.
Hackman was issued a plea deal, which was accepted on May 13. Under that agreement, Hackman received 204 months in prison for first-degree manslaughter and 24 consecutive months for abuse of a corpse in the second degree. Hackman will also have three years of post-prison supervision, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
On Oct. 9, 2022, at 6:31 p.m., police responded to a "suspicious circumstances'" call in the first block of Northeast Marine Drive, where officers found Harris's body. The medical examiner's office determined Harris had died of "homicidal violence."
Hackman, then 22, was arrested and charged in connection with the murder on Oct. 23, 2022. He was booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center and has been there up until the time of his sentencing, said the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office. He will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
