PORTLAND, Ore. — One person was injured early Wednesday morning in a shooting "involving multiple people inside numerous moving vehicles" in inner Southeast Portland, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). A stray bullet also struck a police officer's boot, but did not penetrate.

Officers responded to reports of a threat with a weapon near East Burnside Street and Southeast Grand Avenue at about 12:35 a.m., according to the news release, and arrived to find that two other officers had already been present at the scene for an unrelated call.

The two officers and a bystander took cover when the shooting broke out, but a stray bullet struck the boot heel of one of the officers, becoming lodged in the boot but not penetrating. The officer was taken to a hospital for "treatment of a minor injury," police said, but didn't specify if the injury was related to the bullet impact.

Separately, a gunshot victim was dropped off at a hospital by a private vehicle, and officers later determined that the victim was involved in the shooting incident, according to the news release. The victim is expected to survive.

"I am beyond relieved to learn that both the community member and officer will be okay," Chief Bob Day said. "What unfolded early Wednesday morning serves as a reminder that we must continue to take a holistic approach in addressing gun violence in our city."

PPB's Enhanced Community Safety Team responded to the scene to investigate. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 24-245474.
