PORTLAND, Ore. — A Multnomah County jury has found a 29-year-old man guilty on multiple charges including attempted murder. The charges stem from a downtown Portland shooting in March 2023 that left a man hospitalized for weeks.
Dwayne Driver was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree with a firearm, assault in the first degree with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said on Tuesday.
On March 18, 2023, police officers responded to a shooting at the Chevron on West Burnside and Southwest 4th Avenue. They found a man unconscious in the parking lot behind Dante's. He had gunshot wounds to his stomach, thigh and left arm, the district attorney's office said. The man had emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several weeks.
Surveillance video from the gas station showed a silver Audi SUV park in the parking lot near a party bus. The video shows a man, identified by police as Driver, get out of the passenger's side of the Audi before approaching the party bus. The footage shows Driver step into the bus and fire multiple times, the district attorney's office said. Driver then ran back to the Audi and took off. Police officers found six shell casings.
Detectives saw a silver Audi SUV parked at Driver's home and obtained a search warrant. While serving a search warrant, detectives saw clothing that appeared the same as those worn in the surveillance footage. Police arrested Driver on April 13, 2023.
A trial was held from Dec. 9-12. On Dec. 11, a 12-person jury delivered a guilty verdict on the felon in possession of a firearm charge, and presented guilty verdicts on the remaining charges the next day.
Driver's sentencing has not yet been scheduled. He was previously convicted for attempted murder in connection with a 2014 case in Washington County.
