PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities chased and captured a Washington homicide suspect on Interstate 84 near Troutdale Thursday morning.
The incident led to a 26-mile shutdown of the freeway in both directions from Troutdale to Cascade Locks. Eastbound lanes were reopened at 2:45 p.m.
Oregon State Police first began pursuing the suspect, 26-year-old Grayson Morris, around 10:30 a.m. on westbound I-84 in Hood River. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said Morris stopped several times during the pursuit and exchanged gunfire with OSP troopers.
Morris reportedly carjacked a vehicle from a bystander at Rooster Rock State Park in Multnomah County, the sheriff's office said. Officers stopped Morris about eight miles west of the park, near Troutdale, using a PIT maneuver. Morris' vehicle eventually came to a stop in a field.
He was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Multnomah County Jail on the following charges:
- Attempted murder, four counts
- Unlawful use of a weapon, four counts
- Robbery in the first degree, one count
