'Yelling for help': Homicide investigation underway at apartment complex in Clackamas

Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of a person "yelling for help" at an apartment complex near Mount Talbert Nature Park.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide at an apartment complex near Mount Talbert Nature Park after an incident that left one man dead early Saturday morning.

Around 12:49 a.m. Saturday, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of a person "yelling for help" at the Crown Court Apartments on Southeast 97th Avenue. 

When deputies arrived, they found a bystander giving first aid to a man. Despite the deputies assisting in lifesaving measures, the man died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office identified the man as 30-year-old Jefferson Smith Cates. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide. The cause of death has not yet been reported. No arrests have been made.
