A vehicle hit and killed a man near Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Flavel Street, Portland police said.

PORTLAND, Oregon — A man was hit and killed by a vehicle in Southeast Portland on Feb. 5. Police initially investigated the case as a hit-and-run and then arrested a suspect shortly afterward.

The man who died in the crash was identified as 44-year-old Edward Hanson, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). Hanson's family has been notified.

Skyler Lee-Stiles, 26, of Portland, was arrested shortly after the hit-and-run. His vehicle was also seized as evidence, PPB said.

Around 2:17 a.m., officers responded to a report that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Flavel Street. Officers found the man dead when they arrived. Police later identified him as 44-year-old Edward Hanson. The driver of the vehicle took off, police initially said.

Lee-Stiles was speeding through a work zone when he struck Hanson crossing Southeast 82nd Avenue, who then died, PPB said.

Lee-Stiles was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and charged with criminally negligent homicide; failure to perform the duties of a driver, resulting in death; and tampering with evidence.

The Major Crash Team is investigating.
