DETROIT, Ore — A man drove his truck into a home in Salem and then shot a woman inside before running away, police said. The shooting prompted multiple agencies to search for the suspect, who was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Salem police have identified the suspect as Phillip Wayne Johnson, 37.

Officers responded to the home around 10:40 a.m. near Vista Avenue Southeast and 13th Street Southeast in Salem. The suspect ran away, and the woman, 31, was taken to Salem Health with critical injuries.

Police learned the woman's children, who attend Morningside Elementary School, were possibly threatened, Salem police said. The school was temporarily put into lockdown out of an abundance of caution, but the lockdown was lifted.

Law enforcement agencies in the area received a description of the suspect and the vehicle. Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office spotted the suspect around 11:15 a.m. traveling eastbound on Highway 22E.

Around noon, the city of Detroit published a post on Facebook saying the suspect was "headed for Detroit" and that residents should stay inside their homes and lock their doors.

The deputies were able to stop the vehicle just outside the city limits of Detroit. The suspect had died from "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," Salem police said.

The city of Detroit said on Facebook around 1 p.m. that the "suspect and situation (was) under control."

Law enforcement have not released any additional details surrounding what led up to the shooting. Johnson and the unidentified women knew each other from a previous relationship, according to a Wednesday press release.

As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the eastbound lanes of Highway 22E were closed, according to TripCheck.

This is a developing story, and it may be updated when more information becomes available.

Correction: A previous version of this story stated that law enforcement took the suspect into custody.
