PORTLAND, Ore. — A jury found Robert J. James, the suspect in an October 2018 shooting outside the Moda Center that left one man dead and two other people injured, guilty of murder and other charges, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt reported Tuesday.
James, 39, was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree assault, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
The sentencing for James is scheduled for June 3.
On the night of Oct. 5, 2018, James shot three people on Northeast Multnomah Street and Wheeler Avenue near the Moda Center, following a performance of the Nick Cannon series "Wild 'N Out Live." One of the victims, Markell Devon Jones, later died at a hospital. He was 44 years old. The other two victims, a man and woman, survived their injuries. They were not identified.
In 2018, Jones' younger sister, Kanisha Lomax, spoke to KGW News about her brother's murder, calling it "devastating." She said Jones had a big personality and was always smiling.
"He meant a lot, to a lot of us," Lomax said. "He was our hero. He was a father. He was a son. He was a grandfather. He was so much, so much to everybody."
Lomax, in 2018, said the family just wanted closure.
"It was senseless," Lomax said of the murder. "It was stupid, you know he wasn't looking for trouble."
