PORTLAND, Ore. — A police officer shot and killed a suspect accused of firing a gun in the front yard of a house Wednesday evening in Southeast Portland.
The incident happened around 8:17 p.m. near Southeast 126th Avenue and East Burnside Street in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Multiple people called 911 to report that a person was in the front yard of a house firing a gun. Dispatchers could hear shots being fired in the background, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said.
Officers arrived to the scene and requested help from the Focused Intervention Team (FIT).
At one point during the incident, an officer from FIT fired their weapon and hit the suspect. Paramedics were on scene, but the suspect died, PPB said.
A witness at the scene told KGW that a man who lived on the street was shooting wildly into the air and over the surrounding area with multiple guns before police arrived and shot him. PPB has not publicly identified the suspect. They have also not named the officer who was involved in the shooting.
The Portland Police Homicide Unit is investigating. The Bureau will conduct an internal review of the incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board, as part of the use of force review process.
Anyone with information about the incident, who has not already spoken to police, is asked to contact Detective Brian Simms at Brian.Simms@portlandoregon.gov or Detective Meghan Burkeen at Meghan.Burkeen@portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 22-201695.
This is the fifth shooting by a Portland Police Bureau officer this year — and two of the prior incidents happened just this week.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more details as they emerge.
