BEAVERTON, Ore. — A Beaverton teen is left fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being shot in the stomach last week.
On Nov. 21, just before 5 a.m., Naomi Briggs, 16, was shot while with her friends in Southwest Beaverton. It’s been three days, and four surgeries later — Naomi is still fighting for her life in the ICU. Her mother Andrea Briggs hasn’t left the hospital.
“I kind of do feel like it’s a nightmare…I’m still trying to process it. I’m still in shock. I never thought this would happen ever,” Briggs said.
Beaverton police aren't releasing many details about the shooting or what led up to it. According to court documents, Sky Korbut, 18, had the gun. He was arrested and is facing charges of assault in the third degree and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Briggs tells KGW Korbut was giving her daughter a ride home when his gun went off. That's when Naomi sent Briggs a series of text messages that read: “I got shot Mama Plz Help me.”
“I woke up to that text message saying that she had been shot but her phone was off,” Briggs said.
Naomi was shot in the stomach and rushed to the Oregon Health & Science University hospital.
“The doctor did tell me there was a chance she might not make it and so it’s just been a struggle,” Briggs said.
Naomi’s cousin Lexi Cruz describes her as having a “pure soul.”
“How does something like this happen to somebody like that,” Cruz said.
A GoFundMe is set up to help the family with rising medical bills.
“Hold onto your kids, you never know like what’s going to happen,” Briggs said.
“I think that people need to know guns are not a game, they’re not. It seems like they’re cool and fun until something like this happens,” said Cruz.
Korbut has been released from jail. He is due back in court on Dec. 2.
