GRESHAM, Ore. — Police have taken an armed suspect who fled a traffic stop into a custody, lifting a "shelter in place" notice for an area near Damascus.

On Friday evening, Gresham police officers tried to conduct a traffic stop near Southeast 222nd and Bohna Park Road shortly before noon, according to the agency. The driver sped away from the officers and crashed, then ran from the car.

The agency said that the driver was believed to be armed with a gun. Police surrounded the area and called in SWAT to aid in the search.

Nearby residents were notified to shelter in place through reverse 911, a Gresham police spokesman said, and the public was asked to avoid the area.

Traffic was closed at Southeast 222nd Drive and Bohna Park Road, and drivers were asked to avoid 222nd entirely between Bohna Park and Tillstrom Road.

The shelter in place remained in effect as of 6 p.m. Shortly after 7 p.m., a Gresham police spokesman said that the suspect had been located and taken into custody and police were lifting the shelter in place and reopening the roads.

Gresham police did not immediately provide any further details about the suspect or the circumstances of their arrest.
