PPB said dozens of shots were fired shortly after 1 a.m. in the area of Southeast 9th Avenue and Ankeny Street, just south of East Burnside Street. Officers arrived and found two people, a man identified as 49-year-old Walter E. Mulberry of Portland, and a 17-year-old boy, injured. Both were taken to the hospital, where the man died. The 17-year-old is expected to survive, police said.

The preliminary investigation found that Mulberry was working as a security guard during the time of the shooting. Medical examiners ruled his death as homicide by gunshot, according to PPB.

Parked cars and other objects were hit by bullets in the shooting. PPB said it appears that the suspect or suspects shot from a moving vehicle towards a group on the sidewalk. The suspect or suspects were gone by the time officers arrived. No arrests have been made and PPB did not report any suspect information.

During the investigation, several blocks around Southeast 9th Avenue and Ankeny Street were closed.

Homicide detectives believe many people left the scene before police arrived.
