PORTLAND, Ore. — A driver in a deadly crash near Oregon City was arrested Monday on multiple charges, including manslaughter and DUII. A 59-year-old man died in the crash that took place on Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, deputies responded to a report of a serious crash around 15000 South Clackamas River Drive, just north of Oregon City. A 2009 Mazda CX7 SUV and a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek had been in a head-on collision. Both cars were severely damaged, and one was on fire.
CCSO said the driver of the Subaru, David Christopher Collins, died in the crash. A passenger was found outside the car with injuries, but she is expected to survive.
The driver of the Mazda, 36-year-old Chad Joseph Van Lom, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Upon his release on Monday, Van Lom was immediately arrested and booked into jail, where he is being held without bail, CCSO said.
Investigators learned that shortly before the crash, Van Lom's Mazda had been reported to 911 as a reckless driver. They believe impairment was a factor in the crash, CCSO said.
Van Lom has been charged third-degree assault in reference to DUII, second-degree manslaughter, DUII, reckless driving and two counts of reckless endangering.
