PORTLAND, Ore. — Police have released the name of a man who died after an assault on Portland's Eastbank Esplanade a week ago.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) identified him as 70-year-old John Garcia. The medical examiner determined he died by blunt force to the head and ruled his death a homicide.
On March 22, police responded just before 4:30 a.m. to a reported assault on Southeast Madison Street, in an area near Portland Fire and Rescue Station 21. When the officers arrived, firefighters and other members of the public had intervened in the assault. PPB said Garcia died.
The suspect, Abel Nistor, of Portland, was taken to the hospital, then booked into Multnomah County Detention Center, police said. The 29-year-old man is being charged with second-degree murder, police said.
Police are not looking for any additional suspects.
The Portland Police Homicide Unit is investigating.
