GRESHAM, Ore. — A man was shot during a carjacking Saturday in Gresham, police said Monday. The man was sitting in his car, charging his phone and trying to stay warm during a power outage when he was shot. He was taken to a hospital. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.
The Portland metro area was hit by a severe winter storm Saturday that brought high winds, freezing rain, sleet and snow to the region, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people.
The shooting and carjacking happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday in the area of Northeast 178th Avenue before it turns into Oregon Street, just north of Glisan Street. Police said officers found the stolen vehicle stuck in a snow drift in a nearby parking lot. The suspect had abandoned it before officers arrived. Officers searched the area but didn't find the suspect.
Gresham police is asking residents and business owners in the area to check their video cameras around the time of the shooting and carjacking. Anyone with information is asked to call the Gresham police tip line at 503-618-2719. Information can also be submitted anonymously at crimestoppersoforegon.com or through the Crime Stoppers app.
